Colorize photos with AI

Turn black and white family photos into colour. Clean dust and fading on your device first, then let AI add natural, period-appropriate colour.

Drop a photo here, or tap to chooseJPEG, PNG or WebP. It opens in your browser; nothing is uploaded unless you press an AI button.

How to colorize photo

  1. Scan or open the photo

Flat, glare-free scans work best. A phone photo of a print by a window is fine.

  2. Clean it first

Dust and scratch removal and contrast are preset. Specks that stay get coloured too, so clean first.

  3. Colorize

Press Colorize with AI, compare with the divider, and save.

How accurate is AI colorization?

A black and white photo records brightness only. A red dress and a green dress of the same brightness look identical in grey, so no method can know the true colour. AI colorizers predict likely colours from millions of colour photos: skies blue, foliage green, skin in natural tones.

That is why results look plausible but may be wrong in detail. If a relative remembers a particular coat or car colour, note it; historians colourising archive images use written records and surviving objects for the same reason.

Always keep the original black and white scan alongside the colour version.

Questions people ask

How do I colorize a black and white photo?

Open it, let the preset clean dust and fading, press Colorize with AI and save the result. It takes about 10 to 40 seconds.

Is it free?

Yes, with no account or watermark. AI passes are limited per visitor per hour.

Are the colours historically accurate?

They are plausible guesses. Grey tones do not record colour, so specific items can come out a different colour than they really were.

Can I colorize a damaged photo?

Yes. For creases or tears, run AI restore on the photo restoration page first, save it, then colorize the restored copy.
