Why "sharpen" is not the same as unblur
Deconvolution (Richardson–Lucy) asks: "what sharp image, blurred by this amount, would give exactly what I recorded?" and iterates towards it. It recovers most of the real edge if you guess the blur size correctly.
Past a blur radius of about 5px the detail is gone from the file, and no formula can bring it back. That is where an AI model helps: it redraws edges it has learned from sharp photos. Treat that result as a reconstruction, not evidence.
Why photos go blurry
- Camera shake. Slow shutter speeds indoors or at night let your hand move during the exposure. The old rule: keep shutter time faster than 1 / focal length.
- Missed focus. The camera locked on the background. The subject is soft while something behind it is sharp.
- Subject motion. Kids, pets and sport: the subject moved, the background did not.
- Compression and resizing. Messaging apps shrink photos and re-save them, which smears fine detail.
Make pictures clearer next time
- Tap to focus on the subject before you shoot, and hold the phone with both hands against your body.
- Use burst mode for moving subjects and keep the sharpest frame.
- In low light, brace the phone on something solid, or use night mode and keep still until it finishes.
- Wipe the lens. A fingerprint smear causes a hazy glow that looks like blur.
Questions people ask
Can a blurry photo really be unblurred?
Partly. Blur from slight camera shake or a missed focus spreads each point over a few neighbouring pixels in a predictable way, and deconvolution can reverse much of that. Heavy blur destroys the fine detail, so no formula can bring it back; the AI pass then redraws plausible detail instead.
What is the difference between deblur and sharpen?
Sharpen (unsharp mask) boosts contrast at edges, which looks crisper but creates halos. Deblur (deconvolution) estimates the sharp image that, once blurred, would match your photo. Use a little of both: deblur for the blur itself, then a touch of sharpen.
Why do I see ringing or halos?
Your deblur strength is larger than the real blur. Lower it until halos around bright edges disappear, and raise Noise reduction slightly, because deconvolution also amplifies grain.
Can it fix motion blur from a moving subject?
Only a little. The instant deblur assumes round, even blur (focus or small shake). Streaks from a fast-moving subject run in one direction; the AI unblur pass handles those better.
Can I unblur a face or text?
The AI pass is good at faces and text, but it reconstructs them. The face may look slightly different and letters can be guessed wrong, so do not rely on it for identification or legal evidence.
